The idea for Mackmyra Distillery was hatched in the spring of 1998, when eight friends gathered at a mountain lodge for a skiing trip. Each person had brought along a bottle of malt whisky for the host, and as they sampled the various brands, the group began to discuss the lack of Swedish whisky on the market. From this initial conversation an idea was born, and the friends started to explore the possibilities of making their own brand of high quality Swedish whisky.
The pilot distillery for Mackmyra was established in 1999, and the first drops of raw whisky were distilled that same year. After years of experimenting with 170 different recipes, two were chosen and bottled in 2002: Mackmyra Elegant and Mackmyra Smoke. During this time they had also built a new distillery, and the growth established them as a small-scale producer.
From 2003 - 2005 Mackmyra offered customers the opportunity to track their own personal 30-litre cask all the way from production through maturation to the final bottling, at a time of the customer's own choosing. This led to Mackmyra Preludium in 2006 - 2007, which was the distillery's first young, bottled series of limited edition whiskies. The different editions each possessed their own personal character, and together represented the entire Mackmyra range that was developed in the first few years. The entire line sold out within hours of its release.
In 2008 Mackmyra was able to produce whisky in large volumes, which led to the release of "The First Edition". Mackmyra "The First Edition" Swedish Whisky is handcrafted in small batches and matured in a combination of first-fill Bourbon casks and Swedish oak casks. These small, handmade casks are stored deep underground in the abandoned Bodås Mine, which provides the ideal aging conditions for Mackmyra whisky.
On the nose, Mackmyra "The First Edition" offers bright notes of pear, apple and citrus fruit complemented by hints of vanilla and oak. Lively, peppery spice appears on the palate and merges with notes of dried fruit, caramel, honey and toasted bread. Hints of smoke and dark chocolate add complexity to the toasted oak finish.
Since 2008 the company has released their premium Mackmyra Brukswhisky, as well as the Mackmyra Moment series. We look forward to trying the rest of the Mackmyra line once they reach US shores.
